Manchester United’s narrow 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa was overshadowed by a concerning injury update on captain Bruno Fernandes, with head coach Ruben Amorim admitting the midfielder could face a spell on the sidelines. The setback adds another layer of concern for United as they navigate a demanding stretch of the season.
Bruno Fernandes forced off after first-half issue
Fernandes started brightly at Villa Park and was heavily involved in United’s attacking play early on. However, late in the first half, the Portugal international appeared to tweak his hamstring, kicking the ball out of play despite being under no immediate pressure.
Although he managed to reach the half-time interval, Fernandes did not return for the second half and was later seen back on the bench in visible discomfort.
Given Fernandes’ status as one of Manchester United’s most durable and ever-present players, his early withdrawal immediately raised alarm bells.
Amorim confirms “soft tissue” damage
Speaking after the match, Ruben Amorim offered an honest but worrying assessment of Fernandes’ condition, stopping short of providing a definitive timeline for his return.
“I think it's soft tissue so it's going to be a while. We'll see,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “We need to prepare all the guys that we have for the next game. We cannot use anything as an excuse. No one is going to remember these problems, so let's cope with that. It will make us stronger.”
While Amorim’s comments were measured, the suggestion that Fernandes could be out “for a while” will concern supporters, especially given the midfielder’s importance to United’s creativity and leadership.
Manchester United performance praised despite defeat
Despite the loss and Fernandes’ injury, Amorim was keen to highlight his team’s display against a Villa side strong at home. He felt United deserved more from the contest, even after losing their captain.
“I think we were the better team today. We were unlucky, even with the injury of Bruno, but during the game even without him we were the better team,” he said. “We blocked the transitions quite well and they did really well.”
Ruben Amorim also pointed to Manchester United’s tactical preparation and adaptability, noting that progress is being made even if results do not yet reflect it.
If Bruno Fernandes is sidelined for an extended period, Manchester United will be forced to reshuffle their midfield options.
