Jorge Jesus, Portugal's head coach, recently made it clear that the door is open for Cristiano Ronaldo to return to the national team despite recent tensions. Ronaldo walked out of the team camp last week, creating speculation around his future with the squad. After Portugal's 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway, Jesus emphasized that the decision about Ronaldo's comeback is entirely in the player's hands. The coach expressed willingness to discuss the situation with Ronaldo before the next call-up, but underscored that the player's choice is final.
The controversy originated following Portugal's win against Norway on September 27, where Ronaldo was kept on the bench for the full 90 minutes, a decision that surprised many given his status. Just days before, Ronaldo had started and played in the team's opening victory against Wales. The resulting tension sparked rumors of a feud between Ronaldo and the coaching staff. However, Jorge Jesus downplayed any crisis, suggesting the situation was manageable within the squad.
Federation president Pedro Proenca has also weighed in, calling Ronaldo the greatest player of all time and advocating for a peaceful resolution. He urged that the misunderstandings should be settled internally to preserve team unity. Ronaldo himself hinted at revealing his side of the story to the Portuguese people in due course, stressing his longstanding dedication to the national team. Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record goal scorer, boasting 146 goals in 234 appearances and five Ballon d’Or awards, highlighting the significance of his role in the team’s history.
At present, Ronaldo’s international future is uncertain, but the coach’s open-door approach indicates a path forward if Ronaldo chooses to return. Fans and analysts alike watch closely, as the resolution will impact Portugal’s performance in upcoming tournaments and the dynamics of the squad going forward.
