India showcased their prowess on the hockey field as they marched into the final of the Women's Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier, overpowering Malaysia with a resounding 9-5 victory. With this win, India also clinched a berth for the much-anticipated World Cup next year.
The star of the match, Captain Navjot Kaur, delivered a stellar performance, netting the ball three times (7th, 10th, 17th minutes), and achieving a memorable hat-trick. India's scoreboard further lit up with commendable contributions from Mariana Kujur (9th, 12th) and Jyoti (21st, 26th), both scoring twice. Monika Dipi Toppo (22nd) and Mahima Choudhary (14th) also joined the scoring spree for India.
On the Malaysian front, Zati Muhamad was quick off the blocks, scoring twice in rapid succession (4th, 5th minutes). Dian Nazeri (10th, 20th) and Aziz Zafirah (16th) added to Malaysia's goal tally.
Hockey enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the inaugural Hockey 5s World Cup, scheduled to take place in Muscat from January 24 to 27 next year.
The encounter between India and Malaysia was electrifying from the start. Despite India's aggressive approach, it was Malaysia that initially surged ahead with Muhamad's quick goals. However, India rapidly regrouped, leveling scores and eventually taking the lead, courtesy of strikes from Navjot and Kujur. Choudhary's goal just before half-time solidified India's dominance, leading 5-3.
The second half was equally intense. While Malaysia attempted to close the gap with Zafirah's goal, India kept their momentum going. Stellar performances from Navjot, Jyoti, and Toppo ensured a robust 8-5 lead for India. With Jyoti's ninth goal for India, the victory was sealed.
India now eagerly awaits their opponent for the final showdown, with the contest between Thailand and Indonesia determining their adversary for Monday night's clash.
