Montreal Canadiens have been dealt a significant blow ahead of their playoff push, as star defenseman Kaiden Guhle is set to miss four to six weeks due to a lower-body injury. The announcement came from the team on Saturday, sending shockwaves through the organization and its fanbase.

Guhle’s injury details

The injury occurred during a non-contact play, where Guhle went down without any major interference from an opposing player. Early replays suggest that the issue may involve his groin, a problem that has previously affected him during training camp. Despite that setback, Guhle had made the Canadiens’ Opening Night roster and appeared poised to build on his promising NHL career.

Last season, Guhle’s campaign was also marred by injuries, limiting him to 55 games in which he tallied 6 goals and 18 points. Nevertheless, Montreal remains confident in his abilities, having signed him to a six-year contract extension ahead of this season. The hope is that Kaiden Guhle will make a full recovery and rejoin the team at full strength, as the Montreal Canadiens are aiming to remain competitive in the playoff race.

Xhekaj to step up in Kaiden Guhle’s absence

With Guhle sidelined, the Canadiens are expected to lean on Arber Xhekaj, the tough, physical blueliner, to fill the void on the third pairing alongside Alexandre Carrier. Known for his grit and heart, Xhekaj provides a strong defensive presence, though his offensive contributions are limited.

“With Lane Hutson and Noah Dobson handling most of the puck-moving duties, Xhekaj’s role will focus on defensive reliability and physical play,” the team noted.

While Xhekaj may not see top minutes, his presence is crucial in keeping the Canadiens competitive on the blue line.

Other defensive options

Montreal also has additional internal options should Xhekaj struggle. Marc del Gaizo, who impressed during training camp, could earn a call-up. Similarly, Nathan Clurman, a steady AHL performer with the Laval Rocket, might be given an opportunity.

Additionally, top prospect David Reinbacher remains a potential option, although he is currently sidelined with a hand injury. The Montreal Canadiens are also likely to explore the waiver wire for depth additions, signaling that management is prepared to reinforce the defense if Kaiden Guhle’s absence extends longer than expected.
