Toronto Maple Leafs injury update: Top official provides update about players' recovery
Crucial update on Toronto Maple Leafs injuries

Story Highlights:

Maple Leafs prepare for crucial evaluation on Chris Tanev as he inches closer to a potential return.

Toronto navigates major goaltending setbacks while Dennis Hildeby steps up with strong performances.

Toronto Maple Leafs continue to navigate a challenging stretch of the 2025 season, with several key players working their way back from injury. Despite the setbacks, the organization shared a significant update on the recovery progress of multiple contributors, offering both optimism and caution as the team pushes through its mid-season schedule.

Chris Tanev nears clarity after lengthy absence

Veteran defenseman Chris Tanev, sidelined for an extended period following a November 1 hit from Philadelphia’s Matvei Michkov, remains one of the team’s biggest question marks. Having already battled a prior injury in October, his stop-and-start season has limited him to just eight appearances.

Tanev has recently resumed skating with the group, albeit in a red no-contact jersey—a sign of progress but also a reminder of the caution surrounding his return. Head coach Craig Berube confirmed that a crucial evaluation is scheduled this week.

“He is getting looked at this week — Wednesday, I believe — so we should know some more information after that in terms of where he is at. He feels good. He’s skating and working hard. But we’ll have to see when he is looked at on Wednesday,” Berube said.

The team expects clearer direction after the assessment, which should determine when the 35-year-old defenseman can fully rejoin practice.

Goaltending Carousel continues amid injury wave

Toronto’s goaltending depth has been tested repeatedly this season. Anthony Stolarz, who has been out since mid-November, remains unavailable, and Berube indicated that no meaningful progress has been made.

“There actually is not right now,” Berube said when asked for an update on Stolarz. “He is still not on the ice. I am not sure yet where he is at.”

Joseph Woll, who stepped in as the starter, is now also dealing with an injury but is trending in a more positive direction. According to Berube, the 27-year-old netminder is making encouraging progress and is expected to be out for roughly a week.

“He is progressing the right way,” Berube confirmed.

In the meantime, Toronto Maple Leafs have turned to Dennis Hildeby, recalling the 23-year-old from the Toronto Marlies. Hildeby impressed immediately, delivering steady performances against Carolina and Montreal.

“He’s been good,” Berube said. “Coming in the other night in Carolina, he closed the door for us in that game and looked very calm and cool in there. Last night, again, he was good. He gave us a chance to win the game.”

While Toronto Maple Leafs continue to adjust to a shifting roster, the coming days will be pivotal—particularly with Tanev’s evaluation and Woll’s expected return. With key players gradually working their way back, Toronto hopes stability is finally on the horizon.
