The two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso took a dig at former F1 driver Johnny Herbert as the latter once suggested that Alonso should retire from the sport back in 2016. Replying to what Herbert had to say, Alonso calmly replied that he didn't wish to become a commentator like the British driver.

What did Fernando Alonso have to say to Johnny Herbert?

The incident occurred during the 2016 Bahrain Grand Prix. Alonso was fresh from a crash at the Australian Grand Prix where he damaged his lungs and had broken ribs. The FIA ruled him unfit for the race and thus prevented his participation in the weekend's event.

During the FP3 session of the 2016 Bahrain Grand Prix, Alonso approached Herbert, who was discussing the incident on Sky Sports F1 coverage. Alonso, who was angry by Herbert's earlier suggestions about considering retirement in the FP2 session, expressed his displeasure.

Alonso said, "I will not retire, mate. I was world champion. You ended up as a commentator because you were not a world champion, mate."

The three-time Grand Prix winner didn't shy from replying to Alonso and said, "I know, thank you very much, that's good, okay. I wasn't world champion... Happy man."

Back in 2016, Fernando Alonso was racing with McLaren and it was one of the worst seasons the Spaniard has sustained in the pinnacle of motorsport. Both the years, 2015 and 2016 proved to be very bad for Alonso as he referred to the Honda's engine as a ‘GP2 engine.’

The 2015 season proved to be the worst for Alonso as he only managed to score 11 points. The same story continued in the 2016 season where Alonso was not able to find a victory, pole position or a podium. But, this time around he managed to score 54 points on the board.

Can Aston Martin give him what he wants: Johnny Herbert

Johnny Herbert was asked whether he thinks that Fernando Alonso can win another F1 title and said he can only achieve it with the right car. Back in August Herbert said, "He already has the talent to win the World Championship, but can Aston Martin give him what he wants? A year ago, they started the season with podium finishes, very strong. Fernando was always very happy, but now everything has become a bit more difficult. He usually gets eighth, but that's not what he wants."

"He only works for one thing and that is to win races. But if they give Fernando that car, he will definitely get the job done win the world championship," Herbert concluded.
