During Sunday's F2 feature race at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Indian driver Kush Maini was involved in a life-threatening accident. Kush Maini's car failed to get off the line at the beginning of the race, starting fifth on the grid. Many cars were able to avoid Maini while his car was stuck in the grid; nevertheless, he was hit by a car from behind, resulting in a massive collision and the instant raising of the red flag. Fortunately, Maini and every other driver in the crash made it out unscathed.
Invicta Racing driver Maini had set a solid fifth-place qualifying time for the feature race. The Indian was looking to avenge losing out on points in the sprint race on Saturday. However, the major event that resulted in vehicles going upside down caused his race to finish abruptly and early.
The other drivers severely impacted by the collision were Oliver Goethe, a German-Danish driver, and Pepe Marti, a Spanish driver. But they also made it out of it without suffering any serious injuries. Another indication of improved safety in motorsports was the fact that every driver was safe.
Maini is a member of the Alpine F1 Team's driver academy and is presently in his second season of Formula 2. Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon are currently racers for the team. But in 2025, Australian rookie Jack Doohan will take Ocon's place. Maini is currently battling for a spot as Alpine's reserve driver for the upcoming season.
Maini had a great start to the 2024 Formula Two season, but his performance leveled out in the middle of the season, and he is currently ranked 11th in the Driver's Championship. Driver Gabriel Bortoleto, a Brazilian, is leading the title with him as a partner. Following the restart, Dutch driver Richard Verschoor won the Azerbaijan GP feature race, followed by Victor Martins of France and Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Italy. In 2025, the latter will take Lewis Hamilton's place at the Mercedes Formula 1 team.
