Story Highlights:

Alpine and Jack Doohan decided to part ways in the first half of the season.

Jack Doohan is the son of famous Moto GP rider Mick Doohan.

After being unexpectedly dropped by Alpine just six races into the 2025 Formula 1 season, Jack Doohan’s future in the sport appeared bleak. The Australian rookie, once seen as a rising talent, seemed destined for occasional FP1 appearances at best. However, behind the scenes, Doohan has been quietly rebuilding his F1 career.

Doohan's resilience behind the scenes

Despite the abrupt end to his debut campaign, Doohan has remained active within Alpine’s structure. The 22-year-old has continued working in the simulator, supporting Pierre Gasly and his successor Franco Colapinto. This dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed, especially as Colapinto has struggled to match or exceed Doohan’s performances.

The Argentine driver has yet to break into the top 10, with a best finish of 13th and a DNS (Did Not Start) at Silverstone. This underwhelming showing has helped rehabilitate Doohan’s standing within the paddock.

Cadillac emerges as a potential lifeline

Doohan is now setting his sights on a 2026 return to Formula 1, timed with the introduction of new technical regulations. According to PlanetF1, his father, motorcycle racing legend Mick Doohan has been engaged in discussions with Cadillac team principal Graeme Lowdon. The most recent talks reportedly occurred during the British Grand Prix weekend.

Cadillac’s upcoming F1 entry has drawn interest from several drivers. Among the frontrunners are seasoned veterans Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, both of whom bring significant experience and are seen as safe hands to guide the team through its inaugural campaign. Collectively, the pair boasts 16 Grand Prix victories.

A crowded field of contenders

Doohan isn’t the only young talent vying for a spot. Mick Schumacher, who left Haas in 2022 and has since impressed in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine, has also thrown his hat into the ring.

Yes, obviously the conversations are ongoing, Schumacher told Motorsport Brazil. Communication has been very positive. It's a great project, they've already hired a fantastic number of people for it, it's an incredible project, a great story. So, it's something I feel honored to be a part of, negotiating, and it's a great position to be in.

Felipe Drugovich, currently a test and reserve driver at Aston Martin, is also under consideration. Meanwhile, Zhou Guanyu presents a compelling option due to his experience with Ferrari power units, financial backing, and direct ties to team principal Lowdon.

As Cadillac weighs its options, Jack Doohan’s quiet persistence might just give him the edge in a fiercely competitive field.
