Mick Schumacher, son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, recently shared his emotional journey through racing, revealing how his father’s tragic accident forced him to navigate the sport independently and forge his own path to success.
In an insightful conversation shared through Matt Whyman's new book Inside Mercedes F1, Mick opened up about the profound impact of his father’s life-changing skiing accident in 2013. At just 14 years old, Mick’s world was turned upside down when Michael Schumacher, the seven-time F1 champion, suffered devastating head injuries, leaving him unable to provide the guidance Mick had once relied on.
Early inspirations and the influence of Michael Schumacher
Mick fondly recalled his early years and the influence of his father on his racing career. He spoke candidly about how, as a young boy, he tried to emulate everything Michael did, including his passion for racing. “I was a crazy kid - everything my dad did, I did,” Mick shared, emphasizing how much he admired his father’s competitive spirit and work ethic.
Despite Michael’s iconic status in F1, Mick was never sheltered from the harsh lessons of racing. “My dad was always very open to me trying out whatever I wanted to do, and racing is all I wanted to do because I enjoyed it the most,” Mick said. However, the encouragement was always paired with the demand for excellence, an approach that left a lasting impact on him.
Mick recounted a memorable karting experience where he attempted a risky late-braking manoeuvre. Instead of praise, his father’s response was a challenge: “‘Yes, but you should have braked like that in every corner!’” Michael’s approach was tough but fair, emphasizing the need for commitment and precision in every aspect of racing.
Mick recalled moments when his father pushed him hard, saying things like, “Mick, would you rather go and play football with your friends? If so, we do not need to do all of this. I insisted that I wanted to race, and he said, ‘Okay, then let’s do it properly.’” It was these lessons that shaped Mick’s understanding of the sport and his unwavering dedication.
The shift after 2013: Racing without guidance
Everything changed in December 2013, when Michael Schumacher’s skiing accident left him with life-altering injuries. Mick, just on the cusp of moving from karting to more competitive racing, was suddenly thrust into the harsh realities of the motorsport world without his father’s direct guidance.
Mick reflected on the profound impact this loss had on his career, saying, “Then my dad had his accident. I started racing in the Formula classes the year after, and from that point onwards, I had to find my own feet.” It was a moment that marked the beginning of Mick’s journey into the world of Formula racing, and though he had the legacy of his father’s teachings, he was forced to navigate the sport on his own.
From F1 debut to Mercedes reserve driver
Despite these challenges, Mick Schumacher’s talent and resilience led him to the pinnacle of motorsport: Formula 1. He made his debut with the Haas team in 2021, taking part in his first race at the Bahrain Grand Prix, where he finished 16th.
Over the next two seasons, Mick gained valuable experience in F1, though it wasn’t without difficulty. His time with Haas saw him struggle to match the pace of his more experienced teammates, but his resilience and technical skills were never in doubt.
After leaving Haas, Mick transitioned to a reserve driver role with Mercedes, a team with a rich history and technical excellence. At the same time, he began exploring other avenues within motorsport, including opportunities in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine.

Hopes for 2024 and the road ahead
Mick’s desire to return to Formula 1 in 2024 was recently dashed when Sauber, now under Audi ownership, chose 18-year-old Gabriel Bortoleto for a seat over him.
Despite this setback, Mick remains determined to continue his career in motorsport. His story is one of perseverance, navigating the intense pressures of Formula 1 while also carrying the weight of his father’s legacy.
