Australian field hockey player Tom Craig has been arrested by French authorities on suspicion of purchasing cocaine amidst the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024, police and prosecutors said on Wednesday. FranceInfo, a respected public broadcaster, reported that Craig 'was arrested while allegedly in possession of about one gram of cocaine'. The 28-year-old midfielder, who last represented Australia in the Olympic quarter-final against the Netherlands on Sunday, was arrested during a suspected drug purchase near an apartment building in central Paris around midnight on Wednesday.

Australian Hockey player Tom Craig Arrested for Suspected Drug Purchase

 

Australian Olympic field hockey player Tom Craig remains in police custody after being arrested in Paris on Tuesday. The 28-year-old midfielder was apprehended around midnight following a suspected drug transaction involving cocaine. A 17-year-old individual, believed to be the drug seller, was also arrested. The seller was found in possession of a variety of drugs, including ecstasy pills and synthetic substances. Given the substantial amount of drugs seized, the investigation has been transferred to the French police's anti-narcotics department.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has acknowledged that a member of the hockey team is in custody following the arrest in Paris.

 

"No charges have been laid. The AOC is continuing to make enquiries and arrange support for the Team member," AOC stated.

Tom Craig Faces Legal Proceedings

 

Australian hockey player Tom Craig appeared in a summary hearing on Wednesday night local time to address the drug possession charges against him. It is anticipated that he will make a public statement following the legal proceedings, which may result in a fine. The incident occurred shortly after Craig left an Australian team event. The alleged drug seller, a 17-year-old, was also apprehended with a substantial quantity of drugs, including cocaine, ecstasy, and mephedrone. Due to the minor's age, their identity cannot be disclosed. As of late Wednesday morning Paris time, Craig remained in custody. His legal team has yet to issue a statement.
