Paris Olympics: 10-man India hockey team outclasses Great Britain to qualify for semifinal after thrilling penalty shootout

Indian hockey team led by Hamanpreet defeated Great Britain by 4-2 in the penalty shootout to qualify for their second consecutive Olympics semifinals. India were reduced to 10 men after Amit Rohidas was shown a red card for raising his stick against a Great Britain player. Indian hockey team held Great Britain to a 1-1 draw due to a strong defence with 10 players. Harmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet, Lalit and Rajkumar Pal scored goals for India in the penalty shootout to give India a historic victory. The Indian hockey team also defeated Great Britain in the last edition of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Indian hockey team will surely look to change the colour of their medal in the ongoing event. 

 

Great Britain's attacking start

 

In the first five minutes, Great Britain attacked the Indian hockey team and got three consecutive penalty corners. But the solid defence of the Indian hockey team showed a strong game and did not allow any goal to be scored. After this, at the end of the first quarter, Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh got two consecutive penalty corners in the 14th minute of the match and he too could not score a goal.

Amit Rohidas' red card shocked India

 

In the second minute of the second quarter, when Amit Rohidas was dribbling in the midfield, his hockey stick hit the face of the British player. On this, the referee sent the decision for video referral and later they decided that Amit Rohidas deliberately hurt the British player with the stick. For that, Rohidas was given a red card and was thrown out of the match and India played rest of the match with 10 players.

India scored the first goal and the British made a comeback. However, despite having ten players, Harmanpreet's magic worked in the 22nd minute of the match in the second quarter and he scored a goal on a penalty corner, giving the Indian team a 1-0 lead. However, India could not hold on to this lead for long and just five minutes later, in the 27th minute, Lee Morton scored an equaliser for Great Britain, making the score 1-1.
