Pakistan's star batter Babar Azam hailed Arshad Nadeem for winning the gold medal in the Paris Olympics 2024. While his celebratory post expressed the emotions of every countryman of his nation he made a silly mistake while congratulating the gold medalist. Arshad stunned the world with his 92.97 metre throw breaking the Olympic record and bringing First-ever individual gold for Pakistan. India’s Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal for his 89.45-metre throw and Grenada’s Anderson Peters clinched the bronze with his 88.54m throw.
Babar’s silly mistake
Arshad made history for Pakistan ending their 32-year-long drought to win a medal in the Olympics. The last time they won a medal, Pakistan beat the Netherlands to win the bronze medal in the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Azam thanked Nadeem for bringing gold back to Pakistan after 30 years, but Nadeem is the first-ever athlete to win gold for Pakistan in the Olympics, so his bringing gold after 30 years statement stands incorrect. This was a factual error that was called out by fans.
The 27-year-old’s massive 92.97 meters in his second attempt broke the Olympic record, which was earlier held by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway, who threw 90.57 meters in the 2008 Beijing Games. Arshad displayed his phenomenal skills to the World by throwing a 90 again in his last throw during the event. Babar while writing the post also tagged the wrong Arshad Nadeem which was caught by fans worldwide.
In his viral tweet, Babar wrote, “After 30 long years, the gold is back in Pakistan! Huge congratulations to @arshadnadeem29 for this incredible achievement. You’ve made the entire nation proud.”
The cricketers congratulated Nadeem.
Pakistan has won three gold medals at the Olympics, but all of them came in the men’s hockey competition. Their last title win was way back in 1984, which is 40 years ago. Star Pakistani cricketers like Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Haris Rauf, and Shoaib Akhtar also took to X to congratulate Nadeem for bringing glory to the nation.
"Congratulations to Pakistan's Olympic flag bearer Arshad Nadeem for an absolute brilliant javelin performance winning a gold medal for Pakistan. His persistence & perseverance has done him & the nation proud. It is the first time any Pakistani has won an individual gold for athletics in the Olympics. He is an inspiration for our younger generation," wrote Imran Khan on his X account.
