Indian Olympics medalist Harmanpreet Singh who captained team for the bronze medal in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 has dedicated the team's medal to veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh. India defeated Spain 2-1 in the bronze medal match to win their second consecutive Olympic medal in hockey. The last time, an Indian hockey team pulled off consecutive Olympic podium finishes was way back in 1972. Sreejesh has already announced that this will be his last Olympic game for India.
Harmanpreet said that medals are big and Indian hockey team can beat any team in the world.
"Medal is medal. Both medals are big, I think in terms of Indian hockey, we are going up again, showing that we can beat any team in the world," India captain Harmanpreet Singh said.
Harmanpreet Singh for Indian fans
Harmanpreet urged Indian fans to support hockey more and more and he also promised that they will work and do better in the next edition of games.
"India's history in hockey is huge. We are trying to get us back to the top again. It is my humble plea that please support us and we will definitely do better next time," he further added.
Harmanpreet Singh for PR Sreejesh
Harmanpreet Singh lavished praise on PR Sreejesh as that was his last Olympic match. He dedicated the moment to India's veteran goalkeeper.
“We want to dedicate this medal to Sreejesh because this was his last match. This is a great feeling because we have won consecutive medals. We wanted to win the gold medal but that could not happen unfortunately but relieved that we are not going home empty-handed,” Manpreet said to the official broadcaster after the match.
"There are kids in our team, who are younger than PR Sreejesh's career. He has been with us for such a long time and he has made India proud. It was an emotional moment for the team and we wanted to dedicate this tournament to PR Sreejesh," concluded Harmanpreet Singh.
The 'Great Wall of Indian Hockey' (PR Sreejesh) played more than 300 matches for India.
In Paris, he was in excellent form and made several crucial saves for the country during regulation time as well as during penalty shoot-outs.
