The final of the javelin throw event of the Paris Olympics 2024 had become like a war between India and Pakistan. Pakistan's Nadeem surprised everyone and threw the javelin 92.97 meters and broke the Olympic record. Neeraj Chopra had to overcome this distance to save the gold medal. The Indian star gave his all in his next attempts but could not overcome the distance of Nadeem. Due to this Neeraj Chopra could not save the gold medal and he had to settle for the silver medal with a distance of 89.45 meters.
Whereas Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan created history by winning the gold medal. While Nadeem now became the first athlete for Pakistan to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual event, he also gave his country its first medal after 32 years. Neeraj Chopra has also become the first athlete to win two consecutive Olympics for India in Javelin Throw and the fourth Indian to win two Olympic medals for India. Before this, only PV Sindhu, Sushil Kumar, and Manu Bhakar had achieved this feat. However, despite winning the silver medal, Neeraj was not impressed with his performance.
Neeraj Chopra on his performance
"I'm not that happy with my performance today but the last two or three years haven't been so good. I was always injured. I really tried hard, but I have to do some more work on my injury and technique," said Neeraj Chopra after winning the silver medal.
Nadeem's throw of 92.97 meters had become the biggest hurdle for Neeraj on his path to the gold medal. Neeraj made an excellent throw on the second attempt and threw the javelin at a distance of 89.45 meters, about 90 meters, which was his best season. After this, Neeraj's third throw was also fouled. Now the competition for Neeraj's gold medal was only with Nadeem of Pakistan. Even in his next attempts, Neeraj could not cross the 90-meter mark and had to be satisfied with the silver medal. Anderson Peters of Grenada won the bronze medal in this event with a distance of 88.54 meters.
