India's Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra has once again etched his name in history books after becoming the first Indian to attain the world number 1 ranking in the men's javelin throw on Monday, May 22. The gold winner in Tokyo in 2021 is considered one of India's greatest track and field athletes and in the latest rankings, he dethroned Anderson Peters from the no.1 spot.
Neeraj has been at the top since he won the gold medal win at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. In doing so, he became the first Indian athlete to claim an Olympic gold in athletics. His throw of 87.58 meters propelled him to victory and took him into the annals of Indian sporting history.
Neeraj Chopra is at the summit of the list with 1455 points, followed by Anderson Peters (1433 points) in second and Jakub Vadlejch (1416 points) in third positions respectively. He has been reaching new heights and a few more records could be expected as he is scheduled to travel to participate in the Fanny Blankers-Koen Games at Hengelo, Netherlands on June 4.
Building on his Olympic success, Neeraj continued his dominant form in the following competitions. He displayed his prowess at the prestigious Diamond League in Zurich when he won the gold medal with 89.63 meters throw. This outstanding performance further solidified his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the field of javelin.
Speaking to the press, Chopra said after the competition and said he wanted to remain consistent with his performances heading into the Paris Olympics, which is scheduled to take place in 2024.
"It was a very hard win, but I'm happy, It's a really good start for me. I hope to come in the first place in the next competitions and to keep consistent during this season," Chopra told the media after his win at Doha.
"I feel really good, today was challenging for all athletes, but I'm still satisfied with my result. It was a good start and it's a great atmosphere. Lot of people came to support me and they are really happy," Chopra concluded.
