India star boxer and one of the top medal contenders Nikhat Zareen lost to China's Wu Yu, the top-seeded Asian Games competitor and reigning flyweight world champion In Thursday's women's 50kg Round of 16 bout at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Wu Yu received a bye in the first round of the fight. On the other hand, the Indian, who came into this round with a good win against the German boxer, lost 0-5 by unanimous decision on the judges' scorecard.
The two-time world champion had defeated Germany's Maxi Carina Kloetzer with tenacity on Sunday to advance to the women's 50 kg Olympics pre-quarterfinals. In a rather chaotic round of 32 match at the North Paris Arena, Nikhat defeated the German with a 5-0 score after trailing by three cards after the first round. The unseeded Zareen, who was competing in her first Olympic Games and was regarded as a strong medal contender but was given a difficult draw.

Earlier, Tokyo Olympics bronze victor Lovlina Borgohain started her mission briefly towards her second Olympic medal as she out-punched Norway's Sunniva Hofstad in her 75kg opening game on Wednesday. Borgohain won the fight by a score of 5-0, and she is now just one victory away from adding her Tokyo bronze medal, which she won in the 69-kg division, to her record, which is unprecedented in Indian boxing. Yet, her way is certainly not a simple one as she will take on top-seeded Chinese Li Qian in the final Eight stage on August 4. She would win at least a bronze medal in this fight.
