PV Sindhu stormed into the round of 16 at the Paris Olympics 2024, dismantling Estonia's Kuuba Kristin in straight games 21-5, 21-10 on July 31. The Indian ace was in complete control, leaving her opponent with no answers to her powerful smashes and delicate drops. Drawn in Group M, PV Sindhu had to secure a victory in her final group stage match to advance to the Round of 16. The Indian shuttler took no time to dispatch Estonia's Kristin Kuuba in straight games, showcasing her dominance on the court.
PV Sindhu on a roll at Paris Olympics
With two Olympic medals already in her cabinet, Sindhu is India's brightest hope for another podium finish in bamdinton. PV Sindhu has a stellar Olympic record. She secured a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and followed it up with a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
PV Sindhu cruised through her opening match, defeating Maldives' Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq 21-9, 21-6. With this victory, Sindhu joined Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty as India's representatives in the knockout stages. The former world champion will face a stern test in the round of 16 when she takes on Group N topper, China's He Bing Jiao, on Thursday, August 1.
The upcoming match against He Bing Jiao will be a rematch of the thrilling bronze medal contest from the Tokyo Olympics, where Sindhu clinched a historic victory, 21-13, 21-15, to become India's first female Olympic medalist. Later today, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy will play their final group stage matches. A win for both would set the stage for an exciting all-Indian clash in the round of 16.
Meanwhile after the match, on prospect of clinching historic third Olympic medal, Sindhu told press:
“I think it's one match at a time. I feel really happy when people say that, you know, that they want a hat trick from you, We want that medal from you. It makes me feel really happy. You know, obviously, it comes with a lot of responsibilities, a lot of pressure. But it's important for me to just stay calm and just keep going one match at a time. Because you can't expect easy wins, So, yeah, you have to fight hard for it to earn it”..
