Vinesh Phogat was disqualified after reaching the final of Paris Olympics 2024.

India have ended their Paris Olympics 2024 campaign with six medals where Neeraj Chopra was the only athlete who got a silver medal as all medallists were settled for bronze. However, Indian star wrestler Vinesh Phogat's case is still pending in the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).

After qualifying for the final, Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Paris Olympics because she got an extra 100 gm weight. After disqualifying she appealed against the decision at the CAS. She demanded that she be given a joint silver with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who had lost to Vinesh but was later promoted to the final following her disqualification. After her Olympics disqualification she announced her retirement from wrestling, saying she didn't have the strength to continue.

Why Vinesh disqualified from Paris Olympics 2024

Vinesh Phogat made a great debut in the 50 kg freestyle wrestling of the Paris Olympics and defeated world number one Yu Susaki of Japan in the first match. Even after this, she continued her winning streak and became the first female wrestler of the country to make it to the finals. However, on the morning of the final match, Vinesh's weight was found to be 100 grams more than 50 kg and she could not play the gold medal match.

Why is it a good sign for Vinesh Phogat?

When Vinesh was declared ineligible for the final match, she filed an appeal in the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). In which Vinesh called herself a contender for the silver medal. Lawyers participated in the hearing on behalf of Vinesh. While on the other side, lawyers from United World Wrestling and International Olympic Committee defended the decision. On August 9, both the sides were heard and after that CAS has postponed its decision about three times. That is, in the case in which it was believed that according to the rules, the decision would come soon. There was a delay in it and now the final decision will be announced on August 13. In Vinesh's case, this delay is being said to be in her favor. Which seems to indicate that Vinesh Phogat can return to India with a silver medal.
