Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, India's promising women's doubles pair, faced a challenging defeat against the formidable Chinese combination of Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan during the pre-quarterfinals at the World Championships on Thursday (August 24).

Despite their commendable journey, having reached the semifinals of the prestigious All England Championships in two consecutive editions, the world-ranked 19 pair of Gayatri and Treesa found it difficult to match the intensity of their top-seeded adversaries. The match concluded with the Indian duo losing 14-21, 9-21, spanning a total of 42 minutes.

This clash marked the pairs' second encounter. In their previous meeting, the Indian duo faced a similar fate against the world number one Chinese team during the German Open the previous year.

The credentials of Chen and Jia are indeed impressive. They're three-time World Championships gold medalists, have clinched three BWF titles this season alone, and emerged as runners-up twice.

The match commenced on an optimistic note for the Commonwealth Games bronze medalists. Having been granted a bye in the initial round, they started on the front foot, securing a 5-2 lead against the Chinese, a testament to their synergy on the court.

Throughout the contest, both Treesa and Gayatri displayed glimpses of brilliance, orchestrating commendable rallies. However, their seasoned opponents quickly neutralized their lead, securing four consecutive points to level the scores at 6-6.

Despite some stellar gameplay from Treesa, including an exquisite drop shot, the Chinese demonstrated their elite-level skills, maintaining consistent pressure and taking advantage of errors from the Indian side. The first game saw a few costly mistakes by Gayatri, aiding the Chinese in their journey to secure the game.

The second game saw the Chinese pair in utter dominance, beginning with a 7-1 lead. Although the Indian duo showcased moments of resilience, the sheer expertise and precision of their opponents proved too much. The game witnessed several striking plays from both Chen and Jia, eventually culminating in a victory for the Chinese pair on their first match point.

This defeat serves as a learning experience for the young Indian duo, emphasizing the level of competition and skill present at global championships. They will undoubtedly take this experience as a stepping stone, striving for enhanced performances in future tournaments.
