Avinash Sable, India's acclaimed long-distance runner, added another accolade to his ever-growing list by securing a silver medal in the men's 5000m race during the ongoing Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou. Racing against a formidable group of athletes, Sable completed the run with a commendable timing of 13:21.09. However, the top spot was claimed by Bahrain's Birhanu Yemataw, who set a new Games record by clocking an astounding 13:17.40.
This silver medal isn't Sable's first triumph at the Asian Games. Previously, he dazzled the audience by capturing the gold in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, finishing with an impressive time of 8:19:50s. His performance was not just outstanding; it shattered the existing Games record.
Beyond the Asian Games, Sable's prowess on the track is well-recognized. He earned a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and proudly holds the national record for the 3000m steeplechase, completing it in 8 minutes 11.20 seconds. This season, his best time stands at 8:11.63, which ranks him second among Asian athletes, with only Miura Ryuji of Japan (SB: 8:09.91) ahead of him.
With the Asian Games in full swing in Hangzhou, Sable's main event and area of expertise, the 3000m steeplechase, awaits. While he is well-regarded in this discipline, he will also be showcasing his skills in the 5000m race. Reflecting on his aspirations, Sable confidently stated, “I am confident about steeplechase and my main aim is to win gold in that event but I am also focusing on 5000 metres.” Given his track record and dedication, spectators are eagerly awaiting his next race.
