Narender, representing India in boxing, showcased an inspiring comeback to clinch a spot in the semi-finals of the Men's 92kg category. This victory guarantees him at least a bronze medal, adding another feather to the cap of the Indian boxing contingent at the Asian Games.
During the quarterfinals, Narender faced stiff competition from Iran's Iman Ramezanpourdelavar. The initial exchanges saw Iman taking control, with only two judges out of five favouring Narender in the first round.
However, in a display of sheer grit and determination, Narender swung the momentum in his favour. By the end of the bout, he managed to earn unanimous nods from all five judges in the subsequent rounds. The final scorecard read a commanding 5:0 in favour of the Indian pugilist, marking a significant comeback against a formidable opponent.
This victory is a part of India's successful run in boxing on Saturday, September 30th. Preeti Pawar and Lovlina Borgohain also secured their spots in the semi-finals, ensuring more medals for the country.
Preeti Pawar, the 19-year-old sensation, triumphed over Kazakhstan's three-time World Championship medalist, Zhaina Shekerbekova, with a 4:1 verdict, making her way to the Women's Boxing 54kg semi-finals. This win also grants her a coveted spot in the Paris Olympics 2024.
Lovlina Borgohain, an already celebrated Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist, added to the day's glory. She dominated South Korea's Suyeon Seong, winning 5:0, and has now ensured a medal in the women's 75kg category for the 2023 Asian Games. However, her journey towards securing an Olympic quota is still underway, with only gold and silver medalists in the 66kg and 75kg categories qualifying for the Paris Olympics. Notably, Nikhat Zareen had the distinction of being the first Indian boxer to earn this year's Olympic quota.
All in all, it was a day of significant achievements and promise for Indian boxing, setting the tone for more victories to come.
