Indian boxing sensation Preeti Pawar showcased a phenomenal performance, securing a coveted spot for the upcoming Paris Olympics and guaranteeing herself a medal by storming into the women's 54kg semifinals at the Asian Games.
At just 19, Preeti demonstrated exceptional skill and courage in her quarterfinal bout against Kazakhstan's formidable opponent, Zhaina Shekerbekova. Notably, Shekerbekova is a three-time World Championship medalist and the current Asian champion. Despite facing such an acclaimed adversary, Preeti managed to clinch a 4-1 victory in what can be described as a nail-biting contest.
The initial moments of the bout saw Preeti adopting an aggressive stance. Shekerbekova, leveraging her vast experience, managed to breach Preeti's defence on several occasions. Nevertheless, the young Indian boxer remained undeterred, consistently landing punches on her opponent, which allowed her to carve out a narrow 3-2 lead by the end of the first round.
Preeti's strategy against the 33-year-old Shekerbekova was evident as she began the second round. Avoiding the center of the ring, she effectively employed long-range jabs, demonstrating her tactical acumen. In the final three minutes, both boxers exchanged a flurry of punches, with accuracy eluding them. As the match progressed, Shekerbekova's energy seemed to wane, while Preeti, capitalizing on her youth and vigor, continued her onslaught, ensuring her triumphant win.
This victory has amplified India's presence on the global boxing stage, especially since Preeti's achievement comes hot on the heels of Nikhat Zareen's accomplishment. Zareen had made headlines the previous day, becoming the pioneering Indian boxer to secure an Olympic quota at this event.
It's worth noting the qualification criteria for the Paris Olympics from this event. In the women's categories, those reaching the semifinals in the 50kg, 54kg, 57kg, and 60kg weight classes, and the finalists in the 66kg and 75kg categories, earn their Olympic berths. Meanwhile, in the men's segment, gold and silver medalists across the seven weight divisions will be awarded Olympic spots.
Preeti Pawar's breakthrough at such a young age heralds a bright future for Indian boxing. Her tenacity and skill, coupled with the achievements of her peers, mark a promising trajectory for India in the upcoming Paris Olympics.
