Story Highlights:

Alex Pereira hints that a rematch with Ankalaev may take place around September to November.

The former champion explains his recent silence and the reason behind postponing an immediate return.

In the constantly shifting narrative of UFC’s light heavyweight division, former champion Alex Pereira has finally broken his silence on the ongoing war of words with current titleholder Magomed Ankalaev. During a recent interview at UFC 316 in Newark, New Jersey, Pereira didn’t hold back as he addressed Ankalaev’s recent jabs and the brewing tension surrounding their anticipated rematch.

Magomed Ankalaev calls out Alex Pereira over fight delays

Since capturing the title, Ankalaev has accused Pereira of ducking multiple fight offers. The Russian stated that dates in June, July, and August were floated, all of which were reportedly declined by the Brazilian. Ankalaev even hinted at moving on from a rematch, going so far as to impose a deadline for Pereira to respond.

The narrative coming from Magomed Ankalaev's camp paints Alex Pereira as hesitant, perhaps unwilling to step back into the Octagon. But according to "Poatan," there’s a different story.

Pereira Responds

Speaking to UFC Brasil backstage, Alex Pereira gave a composed yet sharp response to Ankalaev’s provocations. Rather than engaging in back-and-forth banter, the former champion accused Ankalaev of using his name to boost his own visibility.

“He’s also promoting a little if he says my name because no one knows he’s the champion,” Pereira said. “So if he says my name, he appears a little, but I’m not responding to his provocations because I know it’s just to promote. When the time is right, I’ll talk.”

The quote struck a chord with fans who have long debated the star power of both fighters. While Pereira has gained a massive following with his knockouts and charisma, Magomed Ankalaev’s quieter persona and grappling-heavy style haven’t earned the same spotlight.

Timing is everything for Pereira

Alex Pereira didn’t deny turning down the initial fight dates but explained his reasoning. After a packed run as champion, the Brazilian is opting for strategic rest and recovery. He suggested that the rematch is still very much on the table—just not in the immediate months.

“We haven’t talked about it yet but we know that it’s around October. It could be September, October, November.”

This timeframe aligns with UFC’s fall schedule, and fans may not have to wait long before seeing these two warriors clash again inside the Octagon.

What’s next?

As both fighters continue to posture publicly, UFC fans are left anticipating an official announcement. Whether Magomed Ankalaev’s verbal jabs succeed in speeding up the rematch or not, Alex Pereira’s calm yet cutting response shows he’s still very much in control of the spotlight—even without the belt.
