France dominated the possession in the second half but could not score an equaliser.

Spain reached the European Championship final with a 2-1 win over France on July 9. 16-year-old Lamine Yamal stole the show with a goal in the 21st minute. Yamal became the youngest ever goal-scorer in the history of the tournament.

Eight minutes into the first half, France took a lead as Randal Kolo Muani headed in a cross from Kylian Mbappe who played without a mask. In the 21st minute, Yamal delivered with an equaliser from 25 yards. He curled one into the top left corner to etch his name in tournament’s record books.

"We were in a difficult stretch after not expecting to concede so early. I just took the ball and wanted to put it right there. I am very happy," Yamal said.

"I do not try to think about it too much, just enjoy myself and help the team, and if it goes my way, then I am happy (for the goal) and for the win."

It was a Dejav Vu moment for Yamal as the teenager's shot was similar to the one he produced against France in the Under-17 European Championship 2023 semifinal.

Own goal awarded to Almo

After the teenager's sensational goal Dani Olmo scored the winner. His goal was turned into own net by France defender Jules Kounde. The goal was originally adjudged by UEFA but was later awarded to the 26-year-old Spaniard.

"We are very close, just one more step to go. It is incredible what the team is doing. We deserve to be in the final, one step from glory," Olmo said.

"Whether it is my goal, or Koundé's, it does not matter. A goal is a goal. The important thing is that we are in the final."

Late chances missed

France had possession for a better part of the second half. Theo Hernandez had a chance to score the equaliser but his shot hit the bar. Mbappe had a shy at the goal too but his shot hit the bar with four minutes left in the game. Yamal could have extended the lead as well but his strike went just over the crossbar.

Deschamps concedes Spain were better

France coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged that the Spanish team was better in Munich on the night of the semifinal.

"We knew they were a great team, and they proved it again tonight. Even though we were fortunate to open the scoring, Spain made things difficult for us,” said Deschamps.

"They were superior in terms of control and technique. The team that gave the best impression was Spain. So they deserve to win tonight."

Spain will now play either England or Netherlands in the final on July 14 in Berlin. They are chasing a record fourth European Championship title.
