The Spaniard and tennis legend Rafael Nadal pulls out from Laver Cup 2024.

He was supposed to compete for Team Europe.

Rafael Nadal has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Laver Cup in Berlin, citing ongoing fitness issues. This decision, made public on Thursday, has left many fans disheartened, especially as they were looking forward to his participation in the tournament scheduled from September 20-22.

The Laver Cup, introduced in 2017, features top tennis players from Europe competing against those from the rest of the world. It was created through a partnership between Roger Federer’s TEAM8 and two other international companies. The tournament has become renowned for its team-based format and high-profile matchups.

In a tweet posted by Laver Cup Nadal said “I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week. This is a team competition and to really support Team Europe, I need to do what’s best for them and at this moment there are other players who can help the team deliver the win. I have so many great, emotional memories from playing Laver Cup and I was really looking forward to being with my teammates and with Bjorn in his final year as Captain. I wish Team Europe the very best of luck and will be cheering them on from afar".

Nadal's end of the career

Nadal, who has struggled with his form this season, has a 12-7 match record and has not played since the 2024 Paris Olympics. There, he was defeated by Novak Djokovic in the second round. Although Nadal had initially planned to return at the Laver Cup, his fitness concerns have led to his withdrawal, fueling further speculation about his future in the sport.

The news is particularly important given that many fans were hoping this event might be Nadal’s final appearance at the Laver Cup. His last participation in 2022 was memorable, as he played alongside his rival and friend Roger Federer in Federer’s final career match.

In a recent interview with the Spanish TV show “El Hormiguero," Nadal discussed his thoughts on retirement, mentioning that he prefers not to focus daily on the idea of retiring and is considering enjoying tennis after taking a year off. Despite these reflections, his withdrawal from the Laver Cup has intensified discussions about his future in professional tennis.

“When I have a clear decision, I’ll tell you, but don’t ask me because I’m going to end up believing that I need to retire right away,” Nadal told host Pablo Motos. A former world No. 1 and 22-time Grand Slam champion, Nadal has dropped outside the top 150 due to injury struggles. He also withdrew from the 2024 US Open, which was won by current No. 1 Jannik Sinner," said the 22 time Grand Slam winner.

The Team World has won the Laver Cup in recent editions and would be eyeing to win the Cup for the third straight year. Meanwhile this time both the teams are evenly poised with some of the star athletes comprising Team Europe. The likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Carlos Alcaraz , Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Casper Ruud will be a part of the Europe team. While The team World has the US Open finalist Taylor Fritz. Along with him are Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul, Frances Tiafoe, Alex de Minaur, and Alejandro Tabila in the team.
