Holger Rune battles through visible discomfort to secure a hard-fought semifinal berth in Stockholm.

The Danish star admits his condition is “not so good,” casting doubt over his next appearance.

Holger Rune’s path to the semifinals of the Stockholm Open 2025 was anything but smooth. Despite securing a hard-fought victory over Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the Danish tennis star left fans concerned after admitting he was far from feeling his best physically. Rune battled through visible discomfort and a painful left leg injury, eventually prevailing 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 to advance — but his latest remarks have cast doubt over his fitness for the upcoming semifinal clash.

A gritty win amid physical struggles

Rune’s performance against Etcheverry showcased both resilience and vulnerability. After dropping the opening set in a tense tiebreak, the 22-year-old showed characteristic fighting spirit to claw his way back into the contest. However, midway through the third set, it was clear that all was not well. Holger Rune was seen grimacing between points and eventually called for a medical timeout to receive treatment on his left leg.

The discomfort was evident as he continued to limp slightly through the remainder of the match. Yet, even in pain, the Dane refused to back down, finding enough rhythm and determination to close out the deciding set and secure a place in the final four — where he is scheduled to face Ugo Humbert.

Rune’s concerning update: “Not so good”

Following his victory, Rune’s post-match comments raised immediate alarm about his physical state. “Yeah, not so good,” he admitted when asked about his condition during the on-court interview. “I’m very happy that I managed to finish the match, honestly, you know.”

Despite the pain, Holger Rune made sure to thank the Stockholm crowd for their support, acknowledging their role in helping him push through the ordeal.

“I couldn’t have done it without you great fans, so honestly, thank you very much, you really helped me a lot today,” he said. “I was really struggling, as you saw with my left leg, but you know the energy from you guys was very special.”

Semifinal doubt looms large

Rune’s focus now shifts to recovery, though his availability for the semifinal remains uncertain. The world No. 7 expressed cautious optimism but stopped short of confirming his participation. “Yeah, let’s see. I mean, first, I just have to recover and let’s see. I hope to be ready,” he explained. “We’re going to do everything we can to make my body ready, and hopefully I’ll be there.”

Holger Rune, who is eyeing his second title of the season following his earlier triumph at the Barcelona Open, will be hoping his injury doesn’t derail his momentum at a crucial stage of the tournament.
