Australian Open is around the corner, and the world's best tennis players have arrived in Melbourne for the first Grand Slam of the year. Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek will enter the tournament as heavy favourites in the women's singles.
The two currently lead the first two rankings in the WTA. Ahead of their journey at the major, Sabalenka has talked about her rivalry with No. 2 star Swiatek.
Aryna Sabalenka’s honest response to Iga Swiatek rivalry ahead of Australian Open clash
Sabalenka tried to give a crystal clear answer without causing any controversy. The World No. 1 tennis star was asked about her rivalry with the Pole during today’s press conference. The Belarusian replied:
“I think it's actually not only about me and Iga and there is Coco (Gauff), Elena (Rybakina), Jessica (Pegula), I just don't want to forget anyone right now.”
Sabalenka continued:
“But it's not only about me and her, to be honest."
The top-seeded sensation also added that she was wondering if the two players only played “once” last year and have yet to encounter each other this year. While stating that she wishes to face her “more often this season,” Sabalenka said:
“As I said, it's not only about us, there's so many great players I have also great rivalry with so yeah."
Swiatek and Sabalenka have met 13 times in the head to head matches, with the Polish player leading 8-5. In their most recent encounter, which was played last year at the French Open, Sabalenka went on to defeat Swiatek in three sets.
