World No. 1, Iga Swiatek, navigated a challenging first set to clinch a victory over Karolina Pliskova with a score of 7-6 (6), 6-2 in the National Bank Open's second round. Swiatek remarked post-match, “Well, for sure it's nice to have some challenges and overcome them." Fresh from her win at the Poland Open, she mentioned the unpredictability of tennis, saying, “You know, one player can have a bad day. At the same time, the other one can play the best tennis of their life.”
Swiatek now gears up to face 14th seed Karolina Muchova, who recently defeated Sorana Cirstea 7-5, 6-4. It's noteworthy that Swiatek defeated Muchova earlier this year in the French Open final.
In another gripping match of the tournament, Australian Open champion and second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka overpowered Petra Martic 6-3, 7-6 (5). Sabalenka shared her struggle on the court, stating, “Especially on this surface, I was really struggling with all her slices.”
Marketa Vondrousova, the Wimbledon champion and ninth seed, ousted Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 7-5. Intriguingly, Wozniacki, a former World No. 1, was marking her return to the WTA Tour after a hiatus of over three years.
Vondrousova is now set to compete against sixth seed Coco Gauff, who recently bagged a title in Washington and defeated Katie Boulter 6-2, 6-2 in this event.
Other notable matches included third-seeded Elena Rybakina's thrilling win over Jennifer Brady, fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula's triumph over Yulia Putintseva, and 10th seed Daria Kasatkina's close victory against Anna Blinkova.
Canadian star Leylah Fernandez also made headlines, overcoming 11th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia. Fernandez now preps to face Danielle Collins, who recently bested eighth seed Maria Sakkari. The day concluded with an enthralling contest between seventh seed Petra Kvitova and 2021 champion Camila Giorgi, with Kvitova emerging victorious.
As the National Bank Open continues, tennis enthusiasts worldwide remain glued to the unfolding drama and top-tier matchups.
