2025 US Open men’s singles final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner was one of the year’s most anticipated tennis clashes. However, the event was overshadowed by controversy after fans were left stranded outside Arthur Ashe Stadium due to heightened security measures for Donald Trump’s arrival. The disruption has now sparked calls for refunds from disappointed spectators and former players.
Trump’s return causes major delays
The final, scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in New York, was delayed by 30 minutes as tournament officials implemented tighter security for Trump’s first appearance at the US Open in a decade. While Carlos Alcaraz went on to claim his sixth Grand Slam title and reclaim the world No. 1 ranking, frustration mounted outside the stadium.
Large sections of fans were still stuck in long lines at security checkpoints even after play began. Reports revealed that some ticket holders were unable to enter until midway through the second set, missing a significant portion of the high-profile final.
Sam Querrey calls for refunds
Former Wimbledon semifinalist Sam Querrey voiced strong criticism of the situation, urging the USTA to address the mishandling of entry delays. Speaking on the Nothing Major podcast, Querrey described the chaos firsthand.
“Obviously the President was at the match today. The line to get in took forever,” Querrey said. “There was not enough security with the metal detectors checking people in. I think people are going to have to get refunded. There were people who did not get in until midway or until the end of the second set.”
Querrey revealed that when he stepped outside after the opening set, “there was still thousands and thousands of people out there.” He added, “If I am the USTA and I’m assuming a bunch are going to email, I either give a partial refund or tickets next year.”
Backlash over fan experience
The disruptions have left fans frustrated, with many questioning why tournament organizers did not prepare adequately for the increased security requirements. While Donald Trump’s presence drew global attention, it also came at the expense of thousands of paying fans who missed out on experiencing the final in its entirety.
The USTA has yet to issue an official response to the calls for compensation, but the incident has raised fresh concerns about balancing high-profile appearances with the expectations of fans who invest heavily in attending marquee events.
A final overshadowed by controversy
Although Carlos Alcaraz’s victory over Jannik Sinner should have been the defining storyline of the men’s final, the spotlight has shifted to organizational mishaps. Instead of celebrating Alcaraz’s return to the top of men’s tennis, the aftermath has been dominated by debate over refunds, fan treatment, and the disruptions caused by Donald Trump’s attendance.
With pressure mounting from fans and voices like Querrey’s, the US Open may soon be forced to address the issue publicly and consider measures to prevent similar incidents in future editions of the tournament.
