Coco Gauff might have beaten Belinda Bencic at the China Open to reach the quarterfinals; however, a heated exchange between the two tennis players has taken centre stage.
Heated exchange between Gauff and Bencic steals spotlight at China Open, ‘I’m too old for these mind games’
The dramatic exchange unfolded in the second set during a changeover when the Swiss professional, as per the viral video, was not entertained by Gauff’s team and accused them of disrupting her focus. Bencic, seemingly angered and disappointed by the behavior, complained to her chair umpire:
“When I’m going to the line ready to serve, they don’t need to cheer.”
Bencic, who has reached a career high ranking of No. 4, further continued, directly towards Gauff:
“No one’s talking to you. She’s talking to me, okay! I’m too old for these mind games!”
It looked like the situation actually affected the Swiss tennis player as she was defeated with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Gauff might not have been able to dominate the confrontation, nevertheless, she beat the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist with her performance to reach the quarterfinals in Beijing. The second seeded has now improved her career record 4-2 against the 15th seeded player. The two-time Grand Slam champion is now just three wins away from claiming her consecutive titles at the event.
