Tennis masterclass Novak Djokovic clinched a record 24th Grand Slam title when he beat Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the US Open men's singles final on Sunday, September 10.
Playing his 36th career final, he's now standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the iconic Margaret Court, both sharing the record for the most major singles titles. If that wasn't enough, Djokovic added another accolade by becoming the oldest Grand Slam singles champion in the Open Era.
Another dominant win
Dominating the court, Djokovic soon found himself with a 3-0 lead, establishing an early advantage. Medvedev showed sparks of resilience, saving a break and set point at 2-5. However, an untimely error cost him the set.
Both athletes held their serves in the second set, reaching a stalemate at 3-3. A highlight of the match was a breathtaking 31-shot rally, after which Djokovic momentarily lay on the court. Around this time, Medvedev demonstrated his tenacity, holding onto his serve, amidst the looming threat of a break.
Fatigue seemed to be knocking on Djokovic's door. Indications? Four double faults in this set alone. Yet, in a display of sheer determination, he saved a set point at 5-6, forcing the set into a tie-break.
The Tie-Break King
The Serbian's expertise in tie-breaks is well documented. With an impressive record in 2023 of winning 25 tie-breaks and losing just five, Djokovic showcased why many consider him amongst the tennis elites, even at 36.
Djokovic Fights Past Medvedev
The third set saw Djokovic swiftly earning his second service break, taking a 3-1 lead. This was a crucial recovery, especially after his struggles in the previous set. However, Medvedev wasn’t one to be subdued easily. Responding fiercely, he managed to get the break back.
But the Russian's resurgence was short-lived. Djokovic, with an iron-willed spirit, managed another service break, pushing the pressure back onto Medvedev. With the scales tipping in his favour, Djokovic ensured that Medvedev was in a do-or-die position.
Djokovic's Ultimate Victory
In a final bout of tension, Medvedev sought to level the playing field at 3-5, 30-30. A break was essential for him to stay in contention. Alas, Djokovic ensured the opportunity was snuffed out, sealing his triumphant win in this exhilarating thriller.
