Tennis legend Novak Djokovic added another feather to his cap, triumphing over 9th-seeded American Taylor Fritz in a commanding fashion to secure his spot in the US Open 2023 semi-finals. The 23-time Grand Slam winner defeated Fritz 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and 35 minutes, amidst the sweltering heat at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. Not only did this victory delight Djokovic and his fans, but it also saw him break Roger Federer's all-time men's record by marking his 47th Grand Slam semi-final appearance.

The quarter-final match was a rigorous test for both athletes, played under partially closed roofing to offer some respite from the blistering 90-degree Fahrenheit temperature and above 55% humidity. Despite these grueling conditions, Djokovic demonstrated clinical precision, particularly when put under pressure by Fritz. The American competitor, supported by the home crowd, couldn't keep pace with the Serb's intensity, making 51 unforced errors and converting only 2 out of 12 break point opportunities. Djokovic, in contrast, converted 6 out of 9 break points and had a second-serve win percentage of 56.

Speaking about the significance of his new Grand Slam record, Djokovic opened up about his journey and what the sport means to him. "This is the sport that has given me so much in my life, coming from Serbia, a war-torn country when I was growing up. I faced a lot of adversity growing up and I had to endure a lot to even get a shot to travel and play international sport," Djokovic stated. He continued, "I was lucky to encounter some very knowledgeable and passionate people and without their support and my parents, who are here, I wouldn't be here without their love and incredible sacrifice. That is the long answer for what goes through my head when I hear those numbers."

Djokovic, who is chasing his fourth US Open title, also gave a nod to the temporal nature of opportunities at this stage in his career. Djokovic has made the semi-finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments in a single season for the sixth time in his career, Djokovic has surpassed Roger Federer, who had achieved it five times, for the most among males in the Open Era.

"It is a huge opportunity every time I step out on the court at this stage of my life. I don't know how many more opportunities I will get so I am trying to enjoy it as much as I can," Djokovic added.

The Serbian champ is set to face the winner of an all-American quarter-final between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe in the upcoming semi-finals. Djokovic has already claimed the Australian and French Open titles this year and will be looking to add a US Open trophy to his 2023 achievements, following a loss in the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz.

With each match, Djokovic continues to solidify his status as one of the all-time greats in tennis history.
