The World no.1 Carlos Alcaraz showcased his dominance as he masterfully defeated Alexander Zverev with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the US Open quarterfinal clash. This decisive victory on Wednesday has paved the way for Alcaraz to challenge Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals.

Tennis aficionados are eagerly awaiting this contest as it features the champions from the previous two editions of the Flushing Meadows tournament.

The lead-up to the match had stirred discussions regarding Zverev's physical condition and his ability to face the dynamic Alcaraz. Zverev had previously endured the tournament's longest match, a nearly five-hour long duel against Jannik Sinner on Monday. The arduous five-setter in taxing conditions raised concerns about his preparedness for the impending clash with Alcaraz.

Zverev, who had reached the U.S. Open finals in 2020, entered the court with evident determination. However, his energy reservoir depleted rapidly. Despite his earnest efforts, he struggled to match Alcaraz's tempo, who seized the opportunity to secure an uncomplicated victory.

“He (Zverev) was struggling a lot, he was working really hard to come back at his best and finally we all see him showing his best tennis,” Alcaraz remarked post-match. He added, “We enjoy his game, so we are really happy to have him back.”

While the day witnessed soaring temperatures reaching the mid-90s Fahrenheit (32 Celsius), Daniil Medvedev managed to overpower the eighth seed, Andrey Rublev, with scores of 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Medvedev, however, expressed dissatisfaction about playing in such harsh conditions.

Fortunately, by the time Alcaraz and Zverev geared up for their late match at the Arthur Ashe stadium, the brutal heat had simmered down. Zverev started promisingly, with his powerful serves challenging Alcaraz. Yet, as the first set progressed, Alcaraz capitalized on his single break opportunity, leading 5-3.

With Zverev's resolve waning, Alcaraz gained another break in the second set, enchanting spectators with his outstanding shots and racquet-twirling flair.

The defining moment came when a smiling Alcaraz achieved a 5-2 lead, prompting Zverev to request a medical timeout. Zverev resumed the third set, albeit with a conspicuous groin strapping. Nevertheless, he exhibited commendable spirit. Ultimately, the determined Alcaraz managed another crucial break, ensuring his advancement to the tournament's semi-finals.
