Cena has already confirmed on various occasions that he won't return to WWE for another match. His farewell tour started in 2025, with him also winning the 17th WWE Championship and becoming a Grand Slam Champion in November by securing the Intercontinental Championship.

On Instagram, Gunther dropped a two-word message after defeating John Cena, He expressed pride regarding his win over the Grand Slam Champion at Saturday Night's Main Event.

"Time’s Up," wrote Gunther.

 

 

Gunther accepts the hate he has received for being John Cena's final opponent

Gunther has faced heavy criticism on various occasions by fans after winning The Last Time Is Now Tournament and becoming John Cena's final opponent.

In a conversation with New York Post Sports, the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion said that he was not affected by the hate. Gunther said:

"I’m not bothered. I went out on Raw on Monday to send a few words towards him as the only chance I had, and I could feel that energy from the audience, where it’s kind of like they don’t want me to stand there and claim that for me. But I enjoyed it. I think that’s great. That’s what I’m here for, to antagonize people, and if they are antagonized, which they seem to be, then I succeeded, and I thrive off that.”

 

 

Memorable year for John Cena

Throughout 2025, Cena has fought with some of his iconic rivals, including CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, AJ Styles, and others. He also partnered up with the likes of Rey Mysterio during his retirement tour.

It now remains to be seen what WWE has planned for Gunther on the upcoming edition of Monday Night RAW.
