John Cena appeared on SmackDown for one last time in his career. The 17-time world champion locked horns with Sami Zayne for the United States Championship in his last outing at SmackDown. The fight ended in a double disqualification after Brock Lesnar attacked the referee and both superstars. There were many key moments during the as Cena paid tribute to superstars he has competed in the arena with by performing their signature moves.
Cena hit Sami with an angle lock before locking him in the ankle slam. He also performed Kevin Owens' powerbomb and CM Punk's GTS. Cena also hit Sami with a spear.
The fans were a bit puzzled to see Cena hit Sami with a spear as they could not guess the superstar whom Cena paid tribute to. Many superstars have Spear as their finisher.
Cena cleared the air over Spear's usage and confirmed that he paid a tribute to Edge's picture on Instagram. Edge and Cena had a legendary rivalry for many years. They did not face each other after Edge's in-ring return in 2020. Edge is currently associated with AEW and won't face WWE ever again.
As for Cena, he is set to retire at the WWE Saturday Night Main Event on December 13. WWE has not announced his opponent. The future WWE Hall of Famer will appear on WWE Wrestlepalooza on September 20th. Who returned at SummerSlam 2025, made his first appearance since then on this week's show.
AJ Lee to contest for the Intercontinental championship?
The storyline between Seth Rollins and CM Punk could take a pause after Wrestlepalooza, there is no doubt that Lee would be fighting for the IC title. The title match between Lee and Becky could take place at Crown Jewel, set to take place in Perth, Australia in October.
Becky won the championship at Money in the Ban 2025 and has been retaining it since then. The Title is being defended on PLEs on a regular basis.
