Drew McIntyre defeated Cody Rhodes in a 3 Stages of Hell match last Friday on SmackDown to become the new Undisputed WWE Champion. A WWE official has broken his silence about the controversial match.
Controversy in Drew McIntyre's recent fight
In the third and final stage of the match inside a steel cage, Jacob Fatu made his comeback to attack McIntyre. Fatu also beat up Cody Rhodes, which led The Scottish Psychopath to exit the cage door and win the title.
But during the first fight, Drew McIntyre performed a low blow on Rhodes to win the first round. Referee Jason Ayers was distracted by the turnbuckle padding getting removed, letting McIntyre to hit the Claymore kick.
In a post on X (FKA Twitter), Ayers dropped his reaction to McIntyre's dirty tactics.
"Hang on a sec…," Ayers tweeted.
It will be interesting to see if Jason Ayers reverses or can change his decision to give the first fall to Drew McIntyre. If Ayers had seen McIntyre's low blow on Cody Rhodes during the fight, he would have certainly given the win to The American Nightmare through disqualification.
With Rhodes winning the second stage, which was a falls Count Anywhere it would have been a different result.
Drew McIntyre kicked off his Undisputed WWE Championship reign at home
After defeating Cody Rhodes to become the new undisputed WWE champion Drew McIntyre had to fly back home to Glasgow, Scotland. It is not a celebration because there was a live event at The OVO Hydro as part of the Road to Royal Rumble tour.
Interacting with the Glasgow crowd, McIntyre delivered a passionate speech about finally winning a well-deserved title. He won the WWE title at WrestleMania 37 without a crowd, while his World Heavyweight Championship reign that started at WrestleMania 40 lasted just five minutes.
"Last night, you couldn't have written it any better. I won the WWE Championship and the very first place I was able to walk out in front of live fans as the number one wrestler on planet Earth was Glasgow, where I can fulfill my promise," McIntyre said.
McIntyre successfully defended the Undisputed WWE Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura.
