Kansas City Chiefs are navigating a pivotal offseason after a disappointing 2025 campaign, and the latest development signals another notable shift within Andy Reid’s staff.
Following a 6-11 finish — just the second time in 13 seasons under Reid that the team has missed the playoffs — Kansas City is undergoing meaningful changes in its coaching ranks.
While Reid has built one of the NFL’s modern dynasties, capturing three Super Bowl titles in five appearances, the organization now faces the challenge of regrouping and retooling for a bounce-back season.
Rod Wilson moves on after seven-year tenure
The latest shake-up comes with Rod Wilson’s departure. Wilson, who played six NFL seasons as an inside linebacker, began his coaching career with the Chiefs in 2017 as an assistant special teams coach.
After a brief return to the college ranks in 2020, where he spent two seasons with South Carolina and Coastal Carolina, Wilson rejoined Kansas City in 2022.
Over the next two years, he served as a defensive assistant before earning a promotion in 2024 to outside linebackers coach.
In that role, Wilson worked closely with key contributors such as Leo Chenal, Drue Tranquill and Nick Bolton, helping shape a defense that remained competitive during the team’s championship window.
In total, Wilson spent seven seasons with Kansas City Chiefs across two stints, contributing to multiple Super Bowl runs. However, he has now accepted the inside linebackers coaching position with the Arizona Cardinals, leaving a notable vacancy on Andy Reid’s defensive staff.
Kansas City Chiefs facing crucial offseason decisions
Wilson’s exit adds to a growing list of changes this offseason. While Kansas City retained defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, they parted ways with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, who joined the New York Giants. Eric Bieniemy has since been brought in to help revitalize the offense.
With free agency set to open on March 11, the Chiefs must now address both roster upgrades and key coaching hires. Filling Wilson’s role will be critical as Kansas City Chiefs aims to reestablish defensive continuity and return to playoff contention.
