Buffaloes lose a top defensive figure to a professional franchise.

Deion Sanders quickly promotes a new defensive coordinator to stabilize the program.

Colorado Buffaloes faces a significant transition ahead of the 2026 season, as defensive coordinator Robert Livingston is set to leave the program for an NFL opportunity. The move marks a notable shift for head coach Deion Sanders and a Buffaloes defense that has undergone steady evolution over the past two seasons.

Robert Livingston heads to the NFL

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Livingston is joining the Denver Broncos as their defensive passing game coordinator. After serving as Colorado’s defensive coordinator for two seasons, he now returns to the professional ranks.

Livingston’s coaching resume spans over a decade in the NFL. Before arriving in Boulder, he spent 11 years with the Cincinnati Bengals. He joined the organization in 2012 as a scout, holding that position through 2014 before being promoted to defensive quality control coach in 2015. He later transitioned into the role of secondary and safeties coach from 2016 to 2023.

His return to the NFL will see him working under Broncos head coach Sean Payton — a high-profile move that underscores the value Livingston brought to Colorado’s staff.

Deion Sanders moves quickly

Head coach Deion Sanders responded swiftly to the vacancy, promoting Chris Marve to defensive coordinator. Marve joined Colorado this year as linebackers coach after serving three seasons (2022–2024) as Virginia Tech’s defensive coordinator.

Now elevated to signal-caller on the defensive side, Marve steps into a pivotal leadership role as Colorado Buffaloes aim to reset and rebuild momentum.

A crucial 2026 ahead

The coaching shift comes at a delicate time for the program. Colorado finished the 2025 season with a 3-9 record, a stark contrast to its 9-4 campaign in 2024. Over three seasons under Sanders, the Buffaloes hold a 16-21 overall record.

With expectations mounting and roster adjustments ongoing, the departure of a key defensive architect presents both a challenge and an opportunity. For Colorado Buffaloes, 2026 now becomes a defining year — not only in the standings but in establishing long-term stability within the coaching ranks.
