This offseason, Christian McCaffrey became the highest-paid National Football League (NFL) running back. He signed a two-year extension for a whopping $38 million. The San Francisco 49ers were hoping McCaffrey would continue his MVP-level form in this year's season but that wasn't the case.
What did the NFL insider say about Christian McCaffrey's injury status?
During one of the training camps, the 28-year-old suffered calf and Achilles issues that saw him sidelined during the preseason. The injury carried forward as McCaffrey missed the first game of the regular season and the San Francisco 49ers have placed him on injured reserve.
After their 30-13 victory over the New England Patriots in Week 4, reports were coming in that the 49ers would increase McCaffery's activity as he would be returning to action soon. But, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter on Pat McAfee Show said that the 49ers themselves don't know when he will play again.
"I don't think Christian McCaffrey or the 49ers know when he's coming back... They are going to begin to ramp up Christian McCaffrey, potentially starting this week to get him back... but who knows how the calf and Achilles is going to react. In their minds, they're not thinking that he's out for the season at all like it was brought to Kyle Shanahan last week. The thought of that has never occurred to them. It should be occurring because nobody knows when he's coming back," Adam Schefter said.
Jordan Mason played well in the absence of Christian McCaffrey
It was Jordan Mason who filled in the boots when Christian McCaffrey was sidelined at the start of the season. Mason did not disappoint as he has 91 carries for 447 yards and three touchdowns in his first four games. On top of it, he has six catches for 57 yards.
Only four other players and one running back have carried the ball for the San Francisco 49ers this season. Out of the 567 rushing yards of the team, McCaffrey has 447 and out of 129 carries for the team, he has 91 to his name.
