Pittsburgh recently announced the hiring of Steve Scarnecchia as the chief of Mike McCarthy’s coaching staff, a role that has never before existed within the organization.
Scarnecchia joins Steelers after serving in the same capacity with the Atlanta Falcons, marking a notable departure from the team’s traditionally lean coaching hierarchy.

The franchise has long been known for its stability and continuity, having employed just four head coaches since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970.

Steve Scarnecchia’s experience adds operational depth
Scarnecchia brings extensive experience from both the professional and collegiate levels. Prior to his stint in Atlanta, he held the same chief of staff role with the New York Jets under former head coach Robert Saleh.
He also previously worked as the Falcons’ assistant head coach during Dan Quinn’s tenure, including the 2016 season when Atlanta won the NFC and advanced to Super Bowl LI.
His resume also includes time with Syracuse University, his alma mater, and the Denver Broncos, where he worked as a video coach.
Additionally, Scarnecchia is the son of longtime New England Patriots offensive-line coach Dante Scarnecchia, adding another layer of football pedigree to his profile.
The official announcement offered insight into the scope of his responsibilities and how they may translate to Pittsburgh.
“In his roles in Atlanta and New York, he was responsible for coordinating the team’s daily meetings and practice schedules and the overall football activities calendar,” staff reporter Teresa Varley wrote. “In addition, he established the budget for football operations and scheduling practices and organized team and staff events and provided administrative assistance to the coaching and operations staff.”
For Mike McCarthy, the addition of a chief of staff signals a deliberate move toward delegation and operational clarity.
