Veteran cornerback Darius Slay has officially brought the curtain down on an illustrious NFL career, announcing his retirement after 13 seasons at the highest level of American football.
The longtime defensive standout confirmed the decision through a heartfelt message shared on social media, marking the end of a journey that saw him rise from a promising draft pick to one of the league’s most respected defensive backs.
A decorated career comes to an end
Slay leaves the game with an impressive résumé built across more than a decade in the NFL. Over 187 regular-season games, including 176 starts, the former Philadelphia Eagles star recorded 655 tackles, 163 passes defended, and 28 interceptions. He also added six fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, and a sack during his time in the league.
Known to fans as “Big Play Slay,” the cornerback established himself as a premier defensive presence early in his career. His standout 2017 season earned him First-Team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl selection, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s elite defenders.
Originally selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State, Darius Slay quickly became a cornerstone of Detroit’s defense before later continuing his career with the Eagles.

"Dear football, I wanna thank you for all you've done for me. I've been blessed to play the game I loved since I was 5yrs old for an amazing 13yrs at the highest level. Football was my peace, my joy, my everything.
This game put me in a position to take care of my family and loved ones and I'm forever grateful. It's hard to say goodbye, but God has a new chapter for me and I'm ready to turn the page and start my new journey,"
His emotional message resonated with fans across the league, many of whom watched his journey from a young defensive back to a Super Bowl champion.
A Super Bowl Champion’s final chapter
One of the defining moments of Darius Slay’s career came when he helped the Eagles secure Super Bowl LIX, capping the 2024 season with the ultimate prize in football.
Across 11 postseason appearances, he recorded 40 tackles, eight passes defended, and an interception, further cementing his reputation as a reliable playoff performer.
