Green Bay Packers face uncertainty as Lukas Van Ness suffers an injury, with the team awaiting updates on his condition.

His absence could impact the Packers’ defense during a crucial three-game stretch.

Green Bay Packers received a worrying injury update during their Sunday victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, as defensive end Lukas Van Ness suffered a foot injury and did not return to the game. Van Ness had made a sack on Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco in the third quarter when the injury appeared to occur, leaving fans and analysts concerned about his availability in the coming weeks.

Packers await MRI results for Van Ness

Following the game, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur provided an initial update on Van Ness’ status, stating that he had suffered a foot injury but could not confirm the severity or projected recovery timeline.

During his Monday press conference, LaFleur offered some reassurance:

“Yeah, I think we definitely avoided something serious. But how long he’ll be out remains to be seen.”

The team’s optimism is reinforced by the fact that the MRI did not reveal any major damage, though LaFleur’s remarks left Lukas Van Ness’ availability for the upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals uncertain. When asked if the injury occurred during the sack on Flacco, LaFleur replied,

“I believe so, yes.”

Van Ness’ development and early career

The No. 13 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Iowa, Van Ness was considered a developmental prospect. Though he never started consistently for the Hawkeyes, he impressed scouts with his elite athleticism and imposing frame, despite limited college production. Over two seasons at Iowa, he recorded 69 tackles and 13 sacks before declaring for the draft.

Since joining Green Bay, Lukas Van Ness has steadily contributed in a rotational role along a deep defensive line. Over his first two NFL seasons, he accumulated 65 tackles and seven sacks, showcasing his ability to make an impact even without starting every snap.

Lukas Van Ness making a bigger impact in 2025

This season, Van Ness has stepped up his performance, even though he has only two sacks through six games. He’s been a disruptive force with 17 pressures, demonstrating his growing influence on the Packers’ defensive front. LaFleur highlighted his contributions, saying:

“I think he’s playing pretty well. He’s been impactful and playing physical, so if he’s unable to go that’s definitely going to be a loss.”

With Lukas Van Ness potentially sidelined, the Packers’ defensive depth will be tested as they prepare for a three-game stretch against the Cardinals, Steelers, and Panthers. Securing wins during this period is critical for Green Bay to maintain a strong position in the NFC playoff race, especially with stiff competition from teams like the Rams, Eagles, Lions, and 49ers.
