The New England Patriots are on the verge of getting a key defensive asset back as star defensive lineman Christian Barmore is set to return to the practice field. Barmore, who has been sidelined since late July due to blood clots, is nearing a comeback, offering a significant boost to the Patriots’ defensive line.
Barmore’s return after health setback
Barmore’s absence from practice was due to a diagnosis of blood clots, a condition that required medical attention and treatment. His agent credited Patriots trainer Jim Whalen and the medical staff for their quick identification of the issue, which likely played a role in his ongoing recovery. Head coach Jerod Mayo had previously hinted at the possibility of Barmore’s return, stating during a Tuesday press conference, "there is a chance that we'll get him back soon."
The following day, National Football League (NFL) Network’s Ian Rapoport confirmed that Barmore would indeed be back on the practice field, marking a positive step toward his full recovery.
Who is Christian Barmore?
Barmore, drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has quickly become a standout player for the Patriots. Over his first three seasons, the 24-year-old defensive lineman has racked up 12.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss, along with 133 total tackles.
His performance on the field earned him a major contract extension in April, with the Patriots signing Barmore to a four-year deal worth up to $92 million, solidifying his future in New England.
Off-field controversy and apology
While Barmore has garnered attention for his on-field prowess, he also made headlines in October for an off-field incident. He was cited by police following a tense traffic stop in Rhode Island.
Initially, Barmore accused the officers of racism in a social media post, but later deleted the post and issued an apology to the Providence Police Department. The Providence Police Department union praised Barmore’s response, stating, “Mr. Barmore took the high road, and that's commendable.”
Uncertain status for upcoming game
As the Patriots prepare for their Sunday matchup against the Los Angeles Rams at Gillette Stadium, it remains unclear whether Barmore will suit up for the game.
However, his return to practice is a promising sign that the talented defensive lineman could be back on the field sooner rather than later, providing a much-needed boost to the Patriots' defence.
