The New England Patriots are releasing linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley, as per ENPN's Mike Reiss. Bentley, who captained the side thrice during his stay of seven seasons with the Patriots, sat out for most of the last season due to a torn pec. This paints the picture of uncertainty about Bentley's future. In 2023, Bentley played in 16 games, recording 114 tackles, five tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, three pass deflections, and one forced fumble.

New England Patriots Release Linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley

This was his third consecutive season with at least 100 tackles, one sack, and two pass deflections. Bentley has 12 tackles and 0.5 sacks in two games last season before his injury.

Bentley is a tough tackler who excels at stopping the run, covering receivers over the middle, and making tackles on the ball. Despite being sidelined by injury last year, he has remained largely healthy throughout his career and is only 28, making him an intriguing commodity for many teams. The Los Angeles Rams, Las Vegas Raiders, Tennessee Titans, Cincinnati Bengals, and Dallas Cowboys are among the teams that could make an offer. The Raiders and Titans have roster holes after losing linebackers Robert Spillane, Harold Landry, Jack Gibbens, and K'Lavon Chaisson to free agency. Bentley's skill set might benefit both teams.

The Bengals, Rams, and Cowboys, all contenders, are also looking for linebacker help and may be interested in signing Bentley to boost their defenses. Bentley, 28, may be more likely to sign with a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Bentley's departure raises worries about the Patriots' linebacker depth. Backup inside linebackers Jack Gibbens, Christian Elliss, and Jahlani Tavai are all solid starters. Still, the team may consider adding a new starter or depth through the draft or free agency. Veterans CJ Mosley, Isaiah Simmons, and De'Vondre Campbell are still available in free agency. Mosley and Campbell are veteran players who, when healthy, can still be effective starters.
