Kansas City Chiefs will take on Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl 59

Kansas City Chiefs are on the quest to win the Super Bowl for the third consecutive time.

Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, stays on the Super Bowl LIX injury report as he recovers from an ankle injury sustained on December 15, 2024, in a Week 14 game against the Cleveland Browns. On Thursday, the Chiefs classified Mahomes as a full practice participant for the second day in a row. Offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor (knee) and punter Matt Araiza (illness) were both full participants, but wide receiver Skyy Moore (abdomen) was limited for the second straight game as he seeks to return from the injured reserve.

Mahomes has been enduring ankle problems since the final phase of the regular season. He also had a high ankle sprain in the Chiefs' first playoff game two years ago, which worsened three weeks later when he played the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. It's a full circle moment, as he'll face the Eagles again on February 9. Mahomes also had an ankle sprain during the 2019 season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars before winning his first Super Bowl. Mahomes has not missed a game this season due to an ankle injury, but he did sit out Week 18 with nothing to play and received a first-round bye in the playoffs. If anything, he has been running more than normal in the postseason.

In the Divisional Round against the Houston Texans, Mahomes ran 15 yards for a first down in the first quarter. In the AFC Championship Game, he rushed 11 times for 43 yards (three kneels) and two touchdowns. He fumbled in both games.

Despite the concerns, Patrick Mahomes is expected to feature in the Super Bowl. However, if the unfortunate situation prevails for the Chiefs, where they would have to enter the field without their leading man, then it would be a huge setback for the defending champions, possibility throwing the odds in Philly's favor.
