The Cleveland Browns fired coach Kevin Stefanski following the team's season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Browns made the announcement on Monday, finishing Stefanski's six-season tenure with the team.
Stefanski was expected to be sacked at the end of the season after leading Browns to back-to-back losing seasons, managing an 8-26 record over the last two seasons.
Although Stefanski's poor record over the past two season was the key reason behind his firing by the Browns, reports around the league suggest that the two-time NFL Coach of the Year could return with a new team next season.
NFL expert Stephen A. Smith feels that Stefanski's handling of the Browns' quarterback room over the past few seasons could prompt the team to doubt hiring the 43-year-old coach.
"It's automatic that he's going to be a head coach in the league next season? No, it isn't," Smith said. "And I'm going to tell you why. Six seasons in Cleveland, 13 quarterbacks somewhere along the way. Do I not get to look at you as a head coach and say, Could you find somebody? Could you find anybody?
"I get that. It's a tough list. I understand that, but you're talking about three or four people in there that could help you look a little bit better than that... along the way, you being the two-time Coach of the Year, this precipitous drop off happened on your watch."
Former Browns quarterback supports Kevin Stefanski for Giants role
The New York Giants are one of teams looking for a new coach in the offseason after they sacked Brian Daboll midseason. Kevin Stefanski has been linked with the Giants' role and his former Browns quarterback, Jameis Winston, advocated for a move to New York.
“He’s a great leader. Very poised. Doesn’t allow anything outside to effect his thinking,” Winston said. “I think he will be a great fit here.”
Winston played under Stefanski during the 2024 season before joining the Giants on a two-year, $8 million deal in March last year.
