China knocked out of Asian Games cricket without bowling a single ball; Bangladesh still qualifies! Here's how

In a jaw-dropping turn of events that has left cricket fans stunned, China’s women’s team has been sensationally knocked out of the 2026 Asian Games cricket tournament without even bowling or facing a delivery. On the other hand, Bangladesh still qualified for the next round of the event. This has left everyone wondering why China got eliminated while the opponents qualified. 

The quarter-final clash against Bangladesh at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, was completely abandoned after relentless rain made play impossible. Heavy weather had already plagued the venue all week, and on match morning the ground remained waterlogged.

Under the official Asian Games cricket playing conditions (rule 16.10.2 (b)), a washed-out quarter-final sees the higher-ranked side automatically advance. Hence, Bangladesh, ranked above China, progressed straight to the semi-finals while the Chinese side, appearing at only their third Asiad since 2010, were eliminated on the spot.

The decision has sparked debate over whether ranking-based advancement is fair when weather intervenes so dramatically. Yet the rules are clear, and China’s Asian Games cricket campaign has ended before it truly began. This was also applied in the 2023 edition when three of the four last eight matches involving India, Pakistan and Bangladesh were washed out. 

Bangladesh, meanwhile, will now prepare for the next stage with an unexpected bye. On the other hand, Pakistan is set to face Thailand in the second quarterfinal matchup. Talking about India, they will face hosts Japan on Friday.
