Mumbai Indians have parted ways with Mahela Jayawardene. The former head coach’s departure has brought an end to a decade-long association with the five-time Indian Premier League champions ahead of the 2027 season. The Sri Lankan cricket great, widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches in IPL history, leaves after guiding the franchise to three titles during his first stint and returning for a second chapter that ultimately fell short of expectations.

The franchise confirmed the mutual decision in an official statement, marking the close of an era that began in 2017. The 49-year-old first took charge as head coach ahead of the 2017 season and remained in the role until 2022. Under his leadership, Mumbai Indians secured IPL crowns in 2017, 2019 and 2020, establishing themselves as the competition’s most successful side at the time and becoming the first team to claim five titles overall. Those victories, achieved under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, remain the high-water marks of his coaching career with the side.
Mumbai Indian saw success and struggle with Mahela Jayawardene
In 2022, Jayawardene transitioned into a broader role as Global Head of Performance. In that capacity, he oversaw Mumbai Indians’ expanding footprint across international T20 leagues, including MI Emirates in the ILT20, MI Cape Town in the SA20 and MI New York in Major League Cricket. The move allowed the franchise to develop a consistent cricketing philosophy across its multi-team “One Family” structure. After a difficult 2024 season under Mark Boucher, in which Mumbai finished last, the Ambani-owned franchise turned back to a familiar face. Jayawardene returned as head coach ahead of the 2025 campaign.
Jayawardene’s second stint produced mixed results, which included both success and struggles. In 2025, MI reached Qualifier 2 before exiting the playoffs. The 2026 season proved far more challenging. Captained by Hardik Pandya, the side managed only four wins from 14 matches and finished ninth on the points table with a net run rate of -0.584. The campaign was marked by inconsistency, fielding lapses and an inability to build momentum, leading to early elimination from playoff contention. The poor performance heightened scrutiny on the coaching setup and contributed to the decision to part ways.
Both parties bid farewell with mutual tribute
Both parties bid farewell in a warm and respectful tone in their public comments. Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani praised Jayawardene’s contribution extensively. “Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us,” she said. “On behalf of the entire MI family, I want to thank Mahela for his immense contribution and unwavering commitment over the years. We will always cherish the journey we have shared and the memories we have created together. Mahela will always be a part of our #OneFamily, and we wish him every happiness and success in the journey ahead.”
Jayawardene responded in kind, reflecting on a transformative period in his post-playing career. He said:
“Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now.”
Jayawardene added:
“The players, coaching team, the incredible support of the #OneFamily and above all the fans have made this an experience I will always treasure. Together, we have shared some unforgettable moments, overcome challenges and built something we can all be proud of."
Jayawardene continued by saying:
"I want to sincerely thank Mrs. Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their unwavering trust, support and friendship over the years. I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead.”
Mumbai Indians seek new head coach before retention deadline
The timing of the announcement is very crucial as Mumbai Indians must appoint a new head coach before the mid-November retention deadline for the 2027 season, with the player auction expected in mid-December. It has been stated in reports that the franchise has already begun exploring candidates and is in contact with several potential successors. The change comes at a pivotal moment for a side that has experienced fluctuating fortunes in recent years and faces questions about leadership, squad composition and long-term direction. Speculation has also surrounded the future of captain Hardik Pandya, adding another layer of uncertainty as the franchise prepares for a rebuild.
Jayawardene’s departure forms part of a broader shift among IPL coaching ranks. Stephen Fleming, the most successful coach in the league’s history with five titles for Chennai Super Kings, stepped down earlier in 2026 after an 18-year association with the Super Kings. Fleming has since taken up the role of England’s Test head coach. The exits of two of the competition’s most decorated coaches signal a changing of the guard as franchises seek fresh approaches ahead of the next cycle.
As a player, Jayawardene was one of Sri Lanka’s finest batters, amassing more than 11,000 Test runs and captaining the national side with distinction. His transition into coaching proved equally impactful. Beyond Mumbai Indians, he has held roles in other T20 competitions, including with Southern Brave in The Hundred. His calm demeanour, tactical acumen and emphasis on culture and process earned widespread respect across the cricket community.
For Mumbai Indians, the next few weeks will be critical ahead of the deadline. The franchise must balance retention decisions with the appointment of a coach capable of restoring the side to contention. Supporters will hope the next chapter builds on the foundation Jayawardene helped establish while addressing the shortcomings exposed in recent seasons. The Sri Lankan leaves with an enviable record of three IPL titles and the enduring gratitude of a franchise that rose to dominance during his tenure. Whether he returns to coaching elsewhere remains to be seen, but his imprint on Mumbai Indians and the wider IPL landscape is already secure.
