Chicago Cubs suffer major setback as key star lands on injury list

Chicago Cubs have been dealt another significant blow to their pitching staff, with veteran reliever Caleb Thielbar officially placed on the 15-day injured list ahead of their clash with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Injury adds to growing concerns

Thielbar’s setback comes after he exited Thursday’s game with a hamstring issue. The injury has since been confirmed as a hamstring strain, forcing the experienced left-hander to the sidelines at a time when the Cubs can least afford it.

Before leaving the game, Thielbar had surrendered a game-tying home run, adding further frustration to an already difficult outing.

Bullpen depth tested again

The Chicago Cubs’ bullpen has been hit hard by injuries in recent weeks, and Thielbar is just the latest name on a growing list. He had stepped into a more prominent role following the absence of Daniel Palencia, who is dealing with a lat strain.

Other key arms, including Hunter Harvey (triceps inflammation) and Phil Maton (knee tendinitis), are also currently sidelined. The situation has been further complicated by injuries to Ethan Roberts, leaving the relief corps significantly stretched.

In response to Thielbar’s injury, Chicago made several roster adjustments. Vince Velasquez has been promoted to fill the gap in the pitching staff, while Nicky Lopez steps into a newly opened roster spot following the designation for assignment of Scott Kingery.

Additionally, Porter Hodge has been moved to the 60-day injured list, further highlighting the ongoing roster challenges.

Strong form interrupted

Thielbar’s absence is particularly damaging given his strong start to the season. The 39-year-old had posted an impressive 3.12 ERA across 8.2 innings, while also recording two saves and two wins. His elevated strikeout rate added further value, making him one of the more reliable arms in the bullpen.
