Toronto Blue Jays’ offseason took an emotional twist after a heartfelt letter from Max Scherzer’s 8-year-old daughter surfaced following his return to the team.
Before the veteran pitcher agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract on Wednesday, his daughter Brooke had already made her hopes known. In December, she penned a handwritten note addressed directly to the organization, expressing her desire to see her father back in Toronto.
The touching letter, later shared by Scherzer’s wife Erica May-Scherzer, revealed just how much the family cherished their time in Canada.
“Dear Blue Jays,” the note began, “I am so sorry that you didn’t win the World Series. I hope that you win next time. I hope my dad is back on the team. My whole family loves spending time in Toronto with our dad. We loved the aquarium, the (CN) Tower and of course the stadium. I am looking forward to come back next season. Love, Max Scherzer daughter”
A veteran’s return to Toronto Blue Jays
Scherzer, an eight-time All-Star, brings a decorated résumé back to the Blue Jays clubhouse. The 41-year-old right-hander owns a career 221-117 record with a 3.22 ERA across stints with Arizona, Detroit, Washington, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets, Texas, and Toronto.
He currently ranks 11th on Major League Baseball’s all-time strikeout list with 3,489 career strikeouts, just 20 shy of Hall of Famer Walter Johnson.
While his 2025 regular season in Toronto Blue Jays saw him post a 5-5 record with a 5.19 ERA in 17 starts, Scherzer delivered key moments in the postseason. He earned a win in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series against Seattle and started Games 3 and 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
More than just baseball
For the Blue Jays, Scherzer’s return represents both experience and resilience. For his family, it means a return to a city that left a lasting impression — from the CN Tower to the ballpark atmosphere.
In a sport often dominated by numbers and contracts, Brooke’s letter offered a rare glimpse into the human side of the game. And now, with Scherzer officially back in Toronto Blue Jays, one young fan’s wish has become reality.
